William Francis enjoyed a memorable run of poker to take down Concept Midweek Game #35 in Goodwood on Wednesday night.
When you get paid off with the nuts on two occasions during the opening session and manage to bluff off Queens with a pair of 3s, you know it’s going to be a good night of poker. And it was exactly that for William, who played his hands and situations well during the penultimate Midweek Game of the season.
He did so in a field of 38 players, which required a tough grind to final table.
And when the final 9 was reached, it didn’t take long before we had our first exit. Kersh Julie dropped out in 9th place when she was all in with the short stack, holding pocket 2s. She was called by Robin Kayalsum, who opened Q6 and spiked a 6 on the River.
Alain Govender was the next elimination as he crashed out in 8th place. He was all in with AK and was called by Chad Hughes, who tabled pocket 7s. The board stayed low as the pair held up.
Charl September made a long-awaited return to Concept poker and did well to reach 7th place – albeit finishing as the bubble boy. He was all in with A10, which ran against Chad’s pocket 7s. The pair held up against both over-cards.
Preston Jonas fell out in 6th place when he was all in with A10 suited ♠️. He got called by Howard Gabrielse, who held 75 ♣️ suited and hit two pair for the knockout.
Clinton Reddy hit the rail in 5th when he shoved with pocket 4s. He ran into Chad’s pocket 6s, which held up.
Chad was running good with the pairs as his pocket 8s did the business to trump Howard, who went all in with A10 ♣️ suited. Howard failed to hit the board and bowed out in 4th place.
Robin was eliminated in 3rd place as he shoved with pocket 4s. William called with J10, going on to win the pot with two pair.
With no deals made, William and Chad dueled heads-up for league honours, and the decisive hand saw all the chips go into the middle on a flush draw. Chad tabled the higher flush draw with J7 ♣️ suited while William was in bad shape with 64 ♣️ suited.
However, the flush didn’t hit. Instead, William managed to spike a straight to take down the tourney.
