Werner Smit was the big winner in the Freeroll Satellite at Concept on Tuesday night.
WHAT A NIGHT!
The Freeroll Satellite summed up Cape Town’s excitement for the upcoming GrandWest Series as 64 players flocked to Maitland on short notice.
This created an exciting prize pool of R44 200, which offered 6 prizes.
Werner played a solid game to secure first place and the R15 000 Main Event seat.
The Cape Town player is a familiar face on South Africa’s big poker stages and has recorded big results in recent years. He used his experience well to navigate through a challenging field.
Once he got to final table, there was nothing stopping his hot run as he won all the major races to play his way to victory.
The tournament-deciding hand saw him call Chris Gin’s all in with pocket 8s. The latter tabled A6 and managed to flop two pair.
However, Werner still had outs with a 4-card ♦️ flush draw. But he didn’t need the flush as he managed to spike a set on the River to score the knockout.
Chris cashed a R9000 Mini-Bankroll for his efforts in second place.
Reza Slamang was eliminated in 3rd place as he hit a pair of 10s, but fell short against Werner’s KQ, which Rivered the nut straight.
Nigel Heldsinger shoved all in as he hit a 4-card straight with a 9 on a 10♥️8♦️10♦️J♥️Q♥️ board. But this wasn’t good enough against Werner’s K-high flush, which saw Nigel finish in 4th place.
Riyadh Slamang made a move with the short stack with J9 ♦️ suited but he ran into Chris, who called with Q10 ♦️ suited. The flop brought the ♦️ flush draw, but the Turn and River bricked to see Chris win the pot with Q-high.
Prasun Singh played his way into the money with a patient grind, but he had bad timing when shoving A4 into Werner’s Aces. The big pair held up to see Prasun fall out in 6th place.
There were attempts to broker a deal on final table, but this was denied to play for the prizes as is.
This saw the money bubble burst in dramatic fashion.
Chris shoved all in with Queens UTG, which received a call from Allan Ranzani with AK. The King appeared in the window, but the flop ran out KQ4. Chris then spiked quads on the Turn to see Allan critically hit. The latter was eliminated a few hands later in 7th place.
Strini Naidoo was out in 8th place as he shoved with A6. He was called off by Nigel with pocket 10s, which managed to hit top set on the Flop.
Allan and Strini unfortunately left empty-handed, but earned consolation Player of the Year points for making final table.
WELL DONE WINNERS!
