Concept Poker Charity Fund raised R1500 for Pinelands High School hockey star Tyla September ahead of her WP U16 tournament in June.
Tyla has emerged as a sports wonderkid on the WP hockey U16 scene. Having started the sport just last year, her great potential was discovered by accident.
“Tyla first started playing as a sweeper. But one day, their team goalkeeper didn’t show up for a match and she was asked if she wanted to stand in,” explained her mother Carmen September. “She did a fantastic job and really enjoyed the experience. After the match, the coach decided that goalkeeper would be her permanent position.”
A few months later, Tyla took part in a PSI Hockey tournament, which saw some of the best South African on show. She went on to win the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award in her division.
“The award was a really big deal for her. She was really happy with her performances and overall progress in the sport in such a short space of time,” said Carmen. “Tyla is someone who loves sport and has tried most of them, including soccer and netball. But she’s decided to pursue hockey because she loves the challenge.
“As a parent, it’s great seeing her find something that really motivates her, especially at this stage of her life. The start of high school can be difficult for a young person, where you feel lost among so many new faces and classes. Hockey has added so much value on and off the field and I can’t wait to see where it will take her.”
Tyla has started the 2019 season with great success as she made the WP U16 squad. She was part of a huge field of talented players at the provincial trials, which included eight other goalkeepers (some who have played much longer than her), but she managed to make the cut.
“When Tyla received her invite to attend the trials, she had no idea what she was getting herself into. But she did her best and made the squad, which is a huge achievement!” explained Carmen. “She will now need funds for the tournament week, new kit and equipment, which is very expensive. But we are determined to make sure she has what she needs to excel.”
Concept Poker Charity Fund managed to raise R1500 thanks to the contributions from players at Midweek Game #12 last Thursday, 2 May 2019.
“I’d like to thank Concept for this valuable donation. It will really go a long way to make a difference in Tyla’s life.”
Concept Poker chairman Shaun Julie wished Tyla well for the upcoming national U16 tournament.
“It’s heartwarming to see that the Concept Poker Charity Fund has make a big difference in so many lives this year. We’ve donated to three charities already at this stage of the season, including Ubuntu Baby Shelter, Heatherdale Children’s Home and the Christine Revell Children’s Home,” said Shaun.
“Last week, we had the opportunity to raise funds for a talented child from our community and a daughter of one our committee members. The monies needed for children to play at high levels can be very expensive, so we are glad we could positively contribute to Tyla’s cause. We hope she will go on to achieve greater things in the world of sport.”
