Clifford Fortuin won his third Concept tournament of the season at Midweek Game #28 in Goodwood on Thursday night.
With 10 fixtures left on the 2019 schedule (8 Midweek Games and 2 Quarterly Games), Cliffy’s triumph comes at a crucial stage as it elevates him back into the Top 9 – a log payout place. The players who have played 15 games or more and feature in the Top 9 all get paid out. So there’s plenty to play for in addition to the weekly prizes.
And it didn’t come easy for Cliffy on this occasion as he survived a field of 38 players to make the final table.
Concept newcomer Ryan Joffe was the first elimination as he was taken out by Jason Fried. After pre-flop action between the two players, KQ3 hit first street. Jason shoved all in, and Ryan made a hero call, tabling AQ. Unfortunately, he was crushed by Jason’s AK, which held up to stack the pot.
Kershnee Julie then scored a double knockout when eliminating Chad Hughes (J10, 7th) and Franklin Petersen (KQ, 8th). With AK, she put both players all in and spiked an Ace to win a big pot.
Robin Laguma was next to hit the rail in bad beat circumstances. Holding J9 ♦️ suited, he was all in against Cliffy’s AK ♦️ suited and in good shape on a J♠️9♣️3♦️ flop. But runner-runner ♦️ on the Turn and River gifted Cliffy the nut flush and showed Robin the exit in 6th place.
Shaun Julie was out in 5th place when he shoved all in with AJ. He got called by Jason Fried, holding KQ ♠️ suited, which hit the flush to score the knockout.
Kersh then avenged her father’s elimination by eliminating Jason in 4th place. She hit trip 8s on the flop as Jason’s pair with 97 was not good enough.
Imraan Khan ended in 3rd, holding K8 against Cliffy’s AJ, which hit the nut straight.
The final two players agreed on an equal-split deal, which saw Cliffy and Kersh play for the league points.
Kersh came fresh off her first place finish last week, but couldn’t hold up on this occasion as Cliffy won a best out of 5 hand flip.
