ALAIN GOVENDER STEAMROLLS TO TOP SPOT

Alain Govender ran hot to take down Concept Midweek Game #30 at Goodwood Cricket Club on Wednesday.

Alain Govender was stuck with just over 20 000 chips shortly after the break – low stack and headed for an early exit. But a series of fortuitous double-ups put him back into the game, and he used that momentum to run good on final table. It was his first final table in three Concept games this season.

He made the final four eliminations on the night, making him the last man standing in a competitive field of 51 players.

And it was an exciting game from the outset among six full tables – good fun and a series of major hands made, including two sets of quads and a straight flush.

When we finally hit the business end of the tournament, Paul Fischer was our first elimination in 9th. Unfortunately, Paul had to be blinded out shortly before final table as his father was in a car accident on the night and had to rush to hospital. Despite missing two blind sessions, he had enough chips to be blinded out to 9th place. On behalf of Concept Poker Club, we wish your dad a speedy recovery.

The game opened up the game a bit thereafter, and eventually Bradley Jansen was out in 8th place. Bradley Chowles raised in late position, putting pressure of Bradley Jansen’s big blind. The latter shoved all in with Q10 and got called by AJ, which flopped trips and held up.

Gareth Duncan was next to hit the rail in 7th when he shoved a dwindling stack in the small blind, following a raise from Jeremy Jodamus. Gareth tabled K10
♣️ suited against Jemma’s A8 ♠️ suited. Although dominated preflop, Gareth shot ahead on the turn as he spiked a 10, but an Ace on the River scored the knockout.

Patrick Perez did well to reach his first final table of the season, but his run came to an end when he called Terry Hangone’s A8 all-in bet with KJ on the big blind. The Ace flopped to win the hand, which saw Patrick exit in 6th place.

Jeremy Jodamus was running good but he suffered a bad beat to be eliminated in 5th place. After raising with AQ in early position, he received a big all-in shove by Alain in the big blind. Jeremy tanked before making the tough call, and saw he was ahead when Alain tabled AJ – domination station. Jeremy shot even further ahead when the Queen flopped, but runner-runner Jack gave Alain trips and a big pot.

Terry was eliminated in 4th spot when he went all in with A8 with the short stack. Alain made the call on big blind with 56, and was in a strong position on a 345 flop. The Turn and River bricked for Terry, handing Alain another knockout.

Franklin Jodamus tried to make a move with 89 on the dealer button, but ran into a steam train when Alain woke up with Aces on the big blind. The flop ran 822. And although a 9 turned, Alain took down the hand with a bigger two-pair.

Alain and Bradley Chowles battled heads-up, and with no deals made, they played for it all.

Alain had a massive chip lead and made it count in the decisive hand when he called Bradley’s shove on the button. Bradley tabled J9, which raced against Alain’s pocket 7s.

The pair held up to give Alain his first Concept tournament triumph in 2019.
