Clinton Reddy took first place on his first go at Concept Poker during Midweek Game #7 at Goodwood Cricket Club.
It was literally the case of “first man in, last man out” for Clinton, who errantly arrived at the venue on Wednesday evening, not realising our game was moved to Thursday (despite all our event updates stating so). But it looks like setting the early bird arrival record was a good omen for the player.
He sat on Table 1 from beginning to end… holding his own among a field of 55 to take the gold.
It was another entertaining night of Concept Poker thanks to another big field of players. We had several new faces, who enjoyed their first experience at the biggest social poker game in Cape Town.
And three of them managed to cash – Clinton Reddy, Denver Viera and Jerry Thailand.
Unfortunately for Denver, he didn’t even see any action on the final table as Edwin Barlow eliminated him and Dirk Ackerman in one hand. Three eliminations in consecutive hands saw us start final table with 7 players.
It didn’t take long for some action to happen as Mike Cupido shipped with a big stack in late position to put pressure on the players to his left. He got a call from Jerry, who was in a strong position with AQ vs KQ. But unfortunately the K turned as we had our first elimination.
Shane Solomons arrived to the final table as the short stack, but secured a crucial double up with K2 spades vs Bradley Jansen’s AQ. With the chips all in preflop, Shane was delighted on a king high flop… even more so with running 2s on turn and river. (This Lucky Fish Play of the Day was brought to you by Klippies and Coke).
After losing more chips with 86 suited shortly thereafter, Wang became the shortstack. He shipped in hijack position with A8, which was called by Clinton’s pocket 4s. The small pair held as Wang went out in 6th.
Mike and Clinton were the two big stacks on the table… but as they say in poker – nothing is guaranteed – which Mike experienced… just before declining an ICM pot split proposal.
His chips crumbled in two hands against Edwin Barlow. First, he lost a race with 99s against KQ on a queen high board. Then Edwin hero called with A5 preflop against Mike’s shove in small blind, tabling Q8. An ace on the flop sealed Mike’s fate in 5th.
Shane fell out shortly thereafter in 4th, his sixes crushed by Clinton’s J10 of clubs, which turned a straight and rivered a flush – just for good measure.
The final 3 decided on a cash split, with Clinton taking the bigger portion of the money with a chip advantage.
Edwin then fell out, losing his chips to Steve Clarence.
In the final hand, Clinton secured first place with J5 suited, hitting a flush on the river to win maximum league points.
