Gareth Duncan picked up the top prize in the exciting 2K Slam deepstack tourney at Concept Social Poker Club on Sunday.
Despite the short notice and a late venue change, the 2K Slam was a successful event at Concept.
30 players showed up for competition, creating a R76600 prize pool.
Gareth was last man standing in a tough field, with his victory sealed after agreeing a deal among the Top 3.
As chip leader, he took home R27 000 for first place, a well-deserved result having made some big calls in tough situations during his tournament run.
He also had a rough ride on final table, losing 6 of 9 all-in flips, but managed to maintain composure and hold on to his chip advantage to capture the title.
The results follows the big win at the GrandWest Freeroll on Friday, where he captured the R25k Mega Million seat.
The Top 3 deal saw Riyadh Slamang claim R18000 for second place, while Tariro Vanderlinden secured R17000 for third.
It was another impressive result for Riyadh, who’s shown great growth and maturity on the live poker scene this year. He’s already claimed over R40 000 worth of seats for the upcoming GrandWest series, and he will be hoping to take that momentum through to a lucrative cash on the big stage next month.
Tariro boxed well with the short stack on final table, catching important double-ups en route to a bronze-place finish. Having made the money in Melkbos, this result proved why she’s one of the leading ladies in poker in Cape Town.
Grant Hansen picked up a very good result in 4th place, his second cash at Concept in quick succession. He shoved all in UTG with QJ ♠️ suited, but ran into Gareth on the button, who shoved over the top with AK. Riyadh made a big fold in the big blind with pocket 10s. The Jack appeared in the window before the King hit on the flop, giving Gareth the pot with top pair, top kicker.
Like his wife, Francis Vanderlinden also found himself boxing with the short stack before being eliminated in 5th place. He was eventually all in with QJ, and called by Grant with A6 in the big blind. The board ran dry, which saw Grant hold up with Ace high.
A bubble prize was created for 6th place, which was collected by Allan Ranzani. This completed a hat-trick of cashes for the Magician this past week (following the wins in the R600 Turbo and GrandWest Freeroll). He shoved into Gareth’s AQ, which flopped an Ace.
Shane Pillay and Keegan Naidoo unfortunately bubbled on the cash prizes, but earn Player of the Year points for making final table.
WELL DONE WINNERS!
Thanks for a great turnout, creating an impressive prize pool.
This proves there’s an appetite for bigger buy-in tournaments on the local scene, which will become a regular fixture going into next season.
Later today, we will have exciting news around upcoming fixtures and plans ahead of the GrandWest series.
